Stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela: Multiple Casualties Feared at Sangam

Prayagraj, India – A stampede today was reported at the Maha Kumbh Mela, claiming multiple casualties, after a barrier collapsed at the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. The accident occurred on the day known as ‘Amrit Snan’ on the auspicious occasion of ‘Mauni Amavasya,’ which is traditionally known to attract millions of devotees for a holy dip.

At least 15 persons reportedly lost their lives, and several others were wounded in the stampede. Witnesses described a sudden surge in the crowd, with devotees rushing toward riverbanks that brought down security barriers and sparked widespread panic.

Emergency teams immediately responded to the scene, offering medical aid and controlling the panicked crowd. The security forces are trying to restore order and prevent any further incidents. The government has appealed to the devotees to keep calm and follow the safety measures.

**Government Response

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to pilgrims to avoid rushing towards the Sangam and instead opt for nearby ghats for their ritualistic bath. He assured that the administration is actively working to control the situation and provide necessary aid to the victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said with a sense of deep concern that the situation is being closely monitored. “My thoughts are with the families of those affected. Authorities are ensuring that the injured receive the best possible care,” he said.
**Crowd Management Challenges

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a religious gathering, held every 12 years, and is considered the world’s largest. Millions of devotees are attracted to it. Managing such vast crowds has always been a challenge for the authorities. Today’s incident has underlined the critical need for enhanced safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
