Cyclone Fengal to Make Landfall Today: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry On Red Alert

Cyclone Fengal, which intensified into a deep depression from its overnight position over the Bay of Bengal, is going to make landfall today in a space between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram along the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. With wind speeds ranging 50-60 km/hr gusting up to 70 km/hr, this will bring heavy rain that is going to disrupt all activities in coastal regions.
Schools and colleges have been closed in several districts of the state including Chennai, Nagapattinam, and Villupuram. People living in the low-lying areas are being shifted to safer places. Already, the Indian Coast Guard has rescued stranded fishermen and workers from the affected areas.

Disruption and Damage

The rains have halted all flights going to and from to big cities such as Chennai and Madurai. It has also prevented fishing, since the sea waves are so rough. Even agriculture is affected, with floodwaters inundating paddy crops in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu.

Relief Efforts

Rescue and relief teams, specially flood relief units, have been dispatched there. Supply lines of food, water and medicine have been designed by the government. ISRO is monitoring the growth of the cyclone with satellites and will take time to act immediately when the storm is set to develop. The latest news should be fetched for any update and watch out for an official caution in case a storm will occur.
