Remembering Kalpana Chawla, India’s First Woman in Space on Her Birth Anniversary

Today marks the birth anniversary of Kalpana Chawla, India’s first space woman, who created a historical footprint inspiring millions of individuals. She was born on 17th March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. Chawla’s achievement to reach the outer world of space from a small city in India is a source of inspiration of perseverance, passion, and scientific achievement.

Early Life and Education

Kalpana Chawla was interested in space and aviation from an early age. She graduated in a degree of Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College before relocating to the United States to pursue higher education. She earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas and the University of Colorado, respectively. Her academic excellence gave her a career at NASA, where she was selected to become an astronaut in 1994.

Historic Space Missions

Chawla made history in 1997 by being the first woman of Indian origin to go to space as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-87). She spent 15 days in space, performing microgravity experiments and research.

Her second mission, STS-107, occurred in 2003 but was prematurely ended in tragedy. On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry, and all seven astronauts died. Despite the tragedy, Chawla’s role in space exploration is a turning point in history.
