Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) gave a show of strength at the Wankhede Stadium as they defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in a high-scoring match in the 20th game of the IPL 2025 season.
Choosing to bat first on a batting-friendly pitch, RCB put up a record-breaking total of 221/5 in 20 overs, thanks to a scintillating half-century by Rajat Patidar, who hammered 64 of just 32 deliveries. His aggressive innings, sprinkled with six fours and four sixes, was the reason he was declared the Player of the Match. Patidar was ably complimented by the RCB middle order, with steady input from Virat Kohli and Cameron Green, who continued the scoring flow throughout the innings.
The Mumbai Indians responded positively with their top order looking aggressive. But frequent wickets ruined their chase, and they were able to muster only 209/9 in their 20 overs. Although Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma provided some hope to the MI fans with their attacking stroke play, it was not enough to surpass RCB’s daunting target. RCB’s bowling attack kept their cool during the death overs, with Mohammed Siraj and Reece Topley providing vital breakthroughs.
This victory is RCB’s third in four matches, making them one of the early leaders in the league table. The side, which in previous seasons has been criticized for inconsistency, would seem to have discovered a balanced mix in 2025 with both their batting and bowling units firing on all cylinders.
For MI, this loss is part of a bumpy beginning to their campaign. Even with a galaxy-studded lineup, the five-time champions have failed to finish matches and will have to work on problems in their bowling attack, which has leaked runs at important junctures.
RCB captain Faf du Plessis was impressed by his team’s calmness when under pressure and said, “The boys were very intent with the bat, and our bowlers carried out the plans excellently in the last overs. It’s a good sign in the early part of the tournament.”
With momentum in their favour, RCB will seek to continue their winning run, whereas MI is under a must-win situation in their next games if they are to remain in contention for the playoffs.
