The Indian Cabinet has finalized the PAN 2.0 Project as part of the measures leading towards the process of completely transforming the Permanent Account Number (PAN) in India. One of the salient features of the project is that the PAN cards are going to feature QR codes to enhance security and facilitate the much smoother verification process.
The PAN 2.0 Project is set to upgrade the present PAN system in line with the increasing need for digitization and fraud prevention when it comes to money transactions. The QR-coded PAN cards will enable key facts to be immediately available, thus ensuring that the comparison process about any identity verification gets much faster and reliable as well.
Key Features of the New QR-Coded PAN Cards:
- Securely Held Data: It will be encrypted, meaning that tampering or creating counterfeit cards will not be easy
- On the spot verification: On scanning the QR code all important information regarding the cardholder will easily be projected for the banks, financial institutions and government departments to refer to thus simplifying their procedures.
- Digital Integration. The QR code is designed with a robust interface with the digital end, therefore, resulting in less paperwork and lesser human error.

This would be in phases, and all existing PAN holders could be allowed to upgrade their cards, while all new issuances of PAN cards would include the QR code automatically.
