Commercial texts as well as One-Time Passwords may suffer huge delay on December 1st 2024. This may happen because the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had rolled out new instructions about using Distributed Ledger Technology in tracing and authenticating every other commercial message, so that their circulation can be checked to stop spam, phishing scams.
The new framework requires businesses to register their message templates and sender IDs on DLT platforms. Messages not meeting these standards will be blocked by telecom operators. Although TRAI had planned to implement this on November 1, the deadline has been extended to December 1 to give businesses and telecom operators more time to align their systems.
Why This Matters:
- Critical Services Impact: OTPs are a critical part of banking and e-commerce as well as other critical services. A disruption could leave millions of customers inconvenienced.
- Reduced Spam: All commercial messages can be traced through DLT, thus leading to near elimination of spam as well as spam calls and messages.
- Operational Disruption: TRAI’s recommendations have alarmed the businesses and the operators regarding a probable disruption that may be caused to their functioning as they work on revising their existing system.
TRAI’s Dream:
This is part of TRAI’s bigger initiative to save consumers from spam and also to regain trust in the commercial messaging systems. But experts aver that though the initiative may look good, preparedness has been lacking, causing large-scale disruptions.
