11 Indians among 12 Dead at Georgia’s Gudauri Ski Resort

On Dec 14, 2024, 12 people were found dead at the Gudauri ski resort in Georgia. 11 of them were Indian nationals and the other, a Georgian citizen. They were found in a sleeping area above an Indian restaurant Haveli.

Causative Suspected: Carbon monoxide poisoning
Preliminary investigations by the authorities in Georgia reveal that deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The toxic gas is suspected to be released by an oil-powered generator that was turned on when the area experienced a power outage. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can be fatal if breathed in an enclosed space with no proper ventilation.

The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi confirmed the incident and offered its deep condolences. The embassy further stated in a press release that it was closely cooperating with the Georgian authorities to hasten the repatriation process.

Underway Investigation

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has opened a criminal case under the charges of negligent manslaughter. Authorities will try to establish all the circumstances which led the incident and whether safety protocols were breached.
Gudauri is one of the most popular ski resorts in the Caucasus Mountains. It has been a destination for skiers who are interested in high-altitude skiing and beautiful scenery. This tragic incident has seriously questioned the safety measures and preparedness in case of emergencies within the hospitality sector in the region.

Community Reactions and Safety Concerns

This is a tragedy that has shocked not just the Indian community but generally the Georgian community at large. Experts and the public at large demand tougher safety measures, in particular fuel-powered equipment used within confined areas.

This tragedy reminds the following:

Proper ventilation during burning fuel-based appliances
Checks of the safety of hospitality premises
Urgent measures in tightening up safety measures of high-altitude operating resorts.

The global community mourns this heartbreaking loss as investigations continue. Improved safety measures are called for to prevent such incidents in the future.
