Mumbai, April 4, 2025 — Indian cinema is shocked by the passing away of one of its most iconic and revered personalities. Veteran actor, director, and screenwriter Manoj Kumar passed away on Thursday at the age of 87 at his residence in Mumbai. He had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time.
Famous for his patriotic films and successful storytelling, Manoj Kumar was born Harikishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937. He adopted the screen name “Manoj Kumar” as a tribute to actor Dilip Kumar’s performance in Shabnam (1949). During his career, he became a symbol of nationalism in Indian cinema and was popularly known as “Bharat Kumar” by fans and critics.
His repertoire features classics of each era such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), and Kranti (1981). All these films were commercially successful in addition to possessing intense social and patriotic undertones that struck the highest bond among Indian audiences.
To acknowledge his worthy contribution to the world of cinema, Manoj Kumar was honored with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2016. His movies were distinctive in being devoid of pretentiousness, emotionally charged, and possessing good moral tales. He contributed significantly to the golden era of Bollywood with movies that were entertaining as well as patriotic.
Condolences have poured in from all parts of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled and said, “India has lost a film icon. Manoj Kumar’s movies instilled generations with a sense of patriotism. His legacy will continue through his green work.”
Bollywood stars, contemporaries, and fans have rushed to social media to pay their respects and reminisce. His passing marks the end of an era in Hindi cinema.
