Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, commonly referred to as Veer Savarkar, on his death anniversary. Recalling his role in India’s freedom movement, PM Modi remembered Savarkar’s sacrifice, bravery, and unflinching commitment to the country.
In a social media message, PM Modi said, “On behalf of all countrymen, respectful tribute to Veer Savarkar ji on his death anniversary. The grateful nation can never forget his invaluable contribution filled with penance, sacrifice, courage, and struggle in the freedom movement.”
Veer Savarkar: A Revolutionary Icon
Born on May 28, 1883, Nashik, Maharashtra, Savarkar was an ardent propagator of Hindutva ideology and a central figure in the struggle against British colonialism. He was jailed in 1909 for subversive activities and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment in the notorious Cellular Jail of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Savarkar’s works, particularly his book “The First War of Indian Independence”, gave a nationalist take on the 1857 Revolt, and it inspired millions of freedom fighters. In spite of undergoing torture and adversities, he still believed in promoting self-reliance, armed struggle, and national unity.
His Lasting Legacy
Even post-independence, Savarkar was an important personality in Indian politics and ideological thought. His idea of nationalism, cultural pride, and unity still shapes political thinking today.
On this day, various political leaders, historians, and followers also offered their tributes, recognizing Savarkar’s role in India’s history. Events and debates were organized throughout the country to celebrate his legacy.
As the country pays tribute to Veer Savarkar, his ideals still reverberate and motivate future generations to strive towards a greater and self-sufficient India.
