Farmers’ unions in India have decided to step up their protests against the draft agricultural marketing policy of the government. The new policy aims at reforming the existing agri-marketing framework, which is criticized for its corporate-friendly approach to the detriment of the farmers.
- Fears of Privatization: The draft policy is being visualized as an attempt at market privatization which would undermine the power of APMCs and further leave the weaker farmers in their clutches.
- Lack of MSP Guarantee: Farmers say legal guarantee for MSP could be used by the government for exploitation and not ensure price stability.
- No Consultation: The farmer groups claimed that the government had bypassed consultations with all stakeholders, depriving them of their voices on the policy decisions.
Scheduled Protests: To be held by the farmers and their supporters on the streets:
- Demonstrations, marches, and sit-ins would be held throughout state capitals and major cities in the country.
- Withdrawal of the draft policy; robust dialogue on all issues related to the decision.
- The protests will also focus on the demand for legal MSP guarantees and stronger support for small and marginal farmers.
The protests are similar to the 2020-2021 farmers’ agitation, which might result in another major confrontation between the government and agricultural workers. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
