Mullanpur, May 30: Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a power-filled show in the IPL 2025 Eliminator at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, beating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs and qualifying for Qualifier 2. The five-time champions strengthened their quest for their sixth IPL title with this win, setting up an electric match against Punjab Kings for a last-ticket entry.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat, MI opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow provided their team a flying start. Rohit was the mainstay of the innings with a masterful 81 off 50 balls, playing typical vintage cricket with strokes of pure genius in all areas of the park. Bairstow, playing his first game for Mumbai in the IPL, made a strong impression with a whirlwind 47 off only 22 balls.
The middle order trailed the pace with Suryakumar Yadav scoring a good 33, Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya adding 25 and 22* respectively. Together, the batting side led Mumbai to a commanding total of 228/5 in 20 overs, the biggest team score in an IPL 2025 playoff match till date.
Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, received an early blow when captain Shubman Gill got out cheaply for just 1. Despite getting the shock early, Sai Sudharsan struggled valiantly with a remarkable 80-run innings, well supported by Washington Sundar, who made 48. The two propounded GT’s score in the middle overs with some aggressive batting and excellent running between wickets.
However, MI’s bowling attack, led by pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, held their nerve in the death overs. Bumrah dismissed Sundar at a crucial moment, while English pacer Richard Gleeson accounted for Sudharsan to swing the game firmly in Mumbai’s favor. Gujarat eventually fell short, ending their innings at 208/6.
The 20-run win was a testament to MI’s experience in high-pressure games. With this result, GT’s campaign came to a close, while Mumbai’s journey continues as they now face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 for a spot in the IPL 2025 final, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru await.
Mumbai’s all-round dominance, star-studded batting, and clutch bowling highlighted why they remain perennial title contenders in the IPL.
