In an electrifying encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 5 wickets to maintain their dominance in the IPL 2025 season. The match, replete with moral sways and excellent performances, concluded with SRH comfortably chasing down a good score in eight balls.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Chennai Super Kings were unable to find their feet against a tight Hyderabad bowling line-up. Even in the spin-friendly conditions in Chennai, familiar to CSK, their top order could not get started. Frequent wickets kept the home side on the back foot. Key batsmen tried to steady the innings, but none could take their starts to a big score. Then CSK were sent back for 154 runs in 19.5 overs, which looked average in front of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batting strength.
Harshal Patel was the bowler’s choice for SRH, whose brilliant spell disturbed CSK’s middle and lower order. His variations and intelligent pace change were too challenging to resist for the Chennai batsmen. For his spectacular performance, later Harshal was awarded the Player of the Match award.
Pursuing 155 to emerge the winner, Sunrisers Hyderabad pursued the victory with a serene and tactical approach. The top two batsmen ensured there are no initial butterflies, building a firm partnership in action that put them on track through the inning. Though CSK frantically tried their comeback battle with two speeded wickets in the middle overs, the batting strength of SRH never placed them in real pressure.
Solid contributions by the likes of Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram gave Hyderabad the solidity it required. They rotated the strike well and ensured the loose offerings were made to count at times. The Chennai bowling, though attacking in nature, did not have the sharpness required to defend a relatively low score on a batsman-friendly surface.
SRH eventually crossed the finishing line, with 155/5 from 18.4 overs. The chase was a clinical exhibition of contemporary T20 batting — clever, risk-free cricket, and aggressive strokeplay where required.
The loss is a huge blow to Chennai Super Kings, who will now have to re-strategize before the last leg of the league. Their over-dependence on the brilliance of their players rather than collective efforts was again laid bare. SRH’s win, on the other hand, gets them closer to fulfilling a playoff spot, courtesy a team effort where both bowling and batting units came into play when things got tough.
With IPL 2025 heading toward its playoff series, each game is a must-win, and this win may turn around Sunrisers Hyderabad’s fortunes for the season. For Chennai, the future seems bleak but not impossible, if they rebound soon, get back on track, and return stronger.
