Ahmedabad, April 21, 2025 — Gujarat Titans put up a clinical all-round display to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 39 runs in Match 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday evening. The win took GT closer to booking a playoff spot while KKR were left grappling with severe concerns regarding their middle-order solidity and overall game strategy.
Having been invited to bat first, Gujarat Titans amassed a massive 198 for 3 from their 20 overs, fueled by a masterful knock from skipper Shubman Gill, who contributed 75 from 45 balls. Kolkata Knight Riders in return managed 159 for 8, not being able to cope with the demanding asking rate, as Gujarat’s bowlers subjected them to incessant pressure.
Shubman Gill Leads from the Front
GT’s innings was led by skipper Shubman Gill, who again displayed his touch and solidity at the top. His 75-run knock was founded on a solid platform of timing and placement more than raw power. Hitting 8 fours and 3 sixes, Gill set the tone early, rotating the strike nicely and punishing anything loose.
Gill was ably supported by Hardik Pandya, who hit back into gear with a spanking 42 from 25 balls, dotted with 4 fours and 2 sixes. The pair compiled a 68-run third wicket partnership that laid the platform for a successful finish in the last overs.
The late-game push was provided by David Miller and Rashid Khan. Miller added a useful 38 from 22 balls to prevent Gujarat from losing rhythm after Gill fell. Rashid added a scorching 18 not out from 10, presenting the Titans with a score of over par on a track that provided genuine bounce.
KKR’s Answer Stalls
Pursuing 199 was bound to be a tall order, and KKR’s batting was also starting on wobbly feet. The openers Phil Salt and Venkatesh Iyer departed early, and the side was soon under pressure at 31 for 2 during the powerplay.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, pushed up the order, was the only batsman to appear comfortable at the crease. He made 47 from 36 deliveries, hitting some stunning shots, but was not helped at the other end. His fall in the 12th over to Rashid Khan was a setback for the team.
Andre Russell attempted to bring some life to the chase with his trademark aggression, hitting 30 off 18 balls, but wickets fell around him. After Russell was dismissed by a precise yorker by Mohit Sharma, the game decisively turned in Gujarat’s favour.
Nitish Rana provided glimpses of resistance with 28 runs, but the chase petered out as KKR ended at 159 for 8, never coming close to Gujarat’s total.
GT Bowlers Provide a Team Performance
GT’s bowlers carried out their plans to perfection. Mohit Sharma was the choice of the attack, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs, including important wickets of Russell and Rana. Rashid Khan fulfilled his image as a match-winner, posting economical bowling figures of 2 for 24, and strangling the middle overs with his guile and control.
Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya bowled in a disciplined manner as well, contributing to building pressure with dot balls. Gujarat’s attack as a whole made life tough for each KKR batter.
Their fielding was just as crisp, with two outstanding stops at the boundary and quick ground coverage denying easy singles.
Captain Reactions
Talking after the match, GT captain Shubman Gill complimented his team’s all-round performance. “Today, we were clear with our plans. We wanted to post runs on the board and leave our bowlers to do their work. Everybody contributed—this was a proper team win,” he said.
KKR captain Nitish Rana admitted that his team was outplayed. “We lost wickets at crucial times. Our top order didn’t click, and it put pressure on the others. Gujarat played quality cricket,” he said.
Points Table Impact
With this victory, Gujarat Titans climbed to third on the IPL 2025 points table with 16 points, very much in the running for a top-two position. KKR, no longer in the top four, will have to win their remaining games and hope for other teams to do well in order to have any chance of playoff qualification.
What’s Next?
Gujarat Titans will then play Mumbai Indians in what is set to be a blockbuster match. Kolkata Knight Riders, meanwhile, will seek to recover in their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a must-win if they are to remain in the running in the tournament.
With the league stage reaching its last few matches, the intensity is building, and each game from here on could be the difference between making or breaking a team’s season.
